In 2014, Magic Johnson was questioned if there is anyone in the NBA who could compete in his era. An era where playing hard physically was the mantra, and the court sometimes felt like an octagon. Magic named two players that could have played in his era. However, while doing so, he also gave them a reality check.

This question was put to Magic during his interview on The Breakfast Club radio show. In the interview, Magic spoke about his journey through the hurdles of being tested positive for HIV and making a comeback.

He also spoke about his family and the difference between the league he was a part of and the league now. With that said, he also found two players who hold the skills of those in his time.

Magic Johnson on Kobe Bryant and LeBron James

Magic Johnson believed that Kobe Bryant and LeBron James would fit perfectly into his era. However, here came the catch. Johnson revealed that it wouldn’t be easy for them to play in the league during the 80s and 90s. He mentioned that there is no doubt that LeBron would be on the floor for most of the game.

While talking about Bryant, Johnson pointed out that the five-time NBA champion had mental toughness on his side. Thus making him a right fit for the era. However, he said, “Even Kobe (Bryant), if he came down the middle you’re going to get slammed on the floor no question.”?

The Los Angeles Lakers legend reiterated that to play in his era, an individual had to have tough skin. He strongly stated that the Bad Boy Pistons made players like six-time NBA Champions Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan better with their physical defense.

Magic on the NBA now vs. the past

Magic Johnson then spoke about how the relationships between the players were back in the day. He said, “When we came to the arena, you knew we hated you, we knew you hated us and we gonna go at it.”?

The players were still friends off the court, but once they were up against each other, everything changed. While mentioning how much he disliked the Boston Celtics, he touched on his relationship with Celtics star Dennis Johnson.

Dennis Johnson lived in Los Angeles but played for the Celtics. Magic and Dennis were close friends.?However, all that is wiped away when it was game time. Magic said, “When you line up and take something from me, especially that championship, I hate you.”?

According to Johnson, this kind of rivalry disappeared after his era. He stated that opponents now hang out with each other while also having conversations on the court. These practices were missing in his time.
