Ever since Brittney Griner got arrested in Russia, WNBA players are pulling out of the cash-rich league. There have been multiple lucrative offers for players, but a majority stood in support of Griner and have not participated. However, that doesn’t seem to apply to the male players as they continue to participate, despite massive protests against Russia.

The reason why WNBA players go to other leagues like Russia and play is the wage difference. They earn multiple times their WNBA salary in overseas leagues and their leagues also tend to happen in the WNBA offseason. But ever since the arrest of Griner, a lot of players have pulled out of the Russian league. And they have signed contracts with clubs in Turkey, Greece, and other countries.

The WNBA even reported that its players are currently not headed to Russia. Even the US state department had advised Americans to avoid traveling to Russia.

Despite Griner getting arrested and massive protests, there are still dozens of players, some of the ex-NBA players are going to Russia to play. There are looking past the conflict and the relations between the two countries and are going to get a larger paycheck.

Reports suggest that Russia wasn’t their first choice, but they had to because they had to provide for their families. Moreover, there are more than 30 American players who are either playing or planning on playing in Russia.

The Russian league also is pulling out all the stops. According to reports, they are offering more than 50% more than the previous years. And in some cases it is three times what other countries can pay, just to get players to come to play.

The WNBA players have boycotted the Russian league, but they are still finding ways to get players into the game. With the Griner saga not seemingly going to end anytime soon, this may continue for some time. Griner has been away from home for more than 200 days when she was arrested at the Moscow Airport. And she was sentenced to nine years in prison.
