When it comes to sport, feuds and rivalries are something that has been going on for a long time. As a new generation takes over the sport, new rivalries are formed. Anyone would agree that such feuds are bitter to watch, but it is probably safe to say that such bittersweet relationships increases the intensity of a game when said rivals play against each other. And basketball is no different in those terms.

Over the years, throughout the history of NBA, there had been several rivalries, be it between players or teams. There’s Boston Celtics vs Los Angeles Lakers, Wilt Chamberlain vs Bill Russell, Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson, the infamous ‘Bad Boy’ Detroit Pistons vs Chicago Bulls, and of course Michael Jordan vs Isiah Thomas.
Any NBA fan would be aware of the longtime rivalry between Jordan and Thomas. While many rivalries are known to fade out over time, this was one of those select few that never seemed to find a conclusion. But did you know that back in 1990, Thomas had complimented Jordan for his skills? Yes, it is apparently true.
Isiah Thomas once praised rival Michael Jordan
During an interview in The Arsenio Hall Show in 1990, Michael Jordan talked about his hectic schedule and on-court performance. As the interview went on, the host showed him a clip from a previous interview with Isiah Thomas. In the short clip, the former Pistons player can be seen showering compliments on Jordan.

“[Jordan’s] strength, his jumping ability, his touch, and also his knowledge and understanding for the game. He, by far…you know is the best I’ve ever seen.” said Thomas to the host
He further added “And Earvin’s my boy, but…you know Air, he real sweet. I mean dude, you see what he been doing? and it ain’t like we in high school.”
After watching the clip, Jordan replied that to have the respect of peers is something to be proud about. He added that it is far greater than winning any championships.

Despite the civil exchange they had indirectly, in 1990, the duo have been in several conflicts after that. The Last Dance documented the rivalry between MJ’s Bulls and Thomas’ Pistons that was the hot topic in the late 80s and early 90s. However, this video shows a rare instance of the two Hall-of-Famers showing each other the respect they deserve.
