The Los Angeles Lakers and Dennis Schroder have been in the midst of a talk about a contract extension for a while now. Although it looks like Schroder is very clear that he wants to test the water and enter into free agency. This could be concerning for the purple and gold, who are already worried sick of their two superstars being sidelined for so long. With no set timeline for Anthony Davis and LeBron James’ return, this is another burden for them.

Dennis Schroder intends to enter free-agency market

Dennis Schroder is currently earning $15.5 million with the Los Angeles Lakers. Before them, he had a four-year $70 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks, so he won’t be accepting any less than what he was offered long term with the Hawks.

However, as per Brian Windhorst on the Hoop Collective, the purple and gold were willing to offer him a four-year contract worth $84 million. But it looks like they reached an impasse in contract talks because Schroder openly admitted to entering free agency in the summer instead.

On Instagram, Dennis posted a picture of a pre-game workout with an “Always have fun with what you do” caption at the bottom. This led to a fan leaving a comment requesting him to sign the extension with the Lakers. Surprisingly, Schroder took out time to respond and made his intentions about what he wants to do, very clear. He wrote, “No thx.. in the Summer i will sign”.

Why does he not want to sign with the Lakers?

Schroder has been nothing but an asset to the Lakers. With Davis and LeBron out of the lineup, Schroder has been their best two-way player. He may have a few things he needs to improve at. But that doesn’t change how effective a starter he is for the defending champions.

The 27-year-old is in the prime of his career and it only makes sense for him to see what he is worth in the free-agent market in the Summer. With the way he contributes to a team, he could actually bag an even more lucrative contract than what the Lakers offered him.

However, nothing can be said in utmost certainty. Only time will tell whether Schroder will be back with the Lakers. Or he’ll find another team to take his talents to.
