Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry was not a high draft prospect. There was hardly anyone who would have thought Curry would become the star he is today. And in his younger days, Curry had a tough time getting used to his craft. In fact, he once left his mother heartbroken after following in his father’s footsteps.

Steph is the son of Charlotte Hornets legend Dell Curry. He was one of the best shooters of his generation and his sons would have a tough time following in his footsteps. And Stephen Curry felt it in his early days, especially at one of his games. The young talent had coaches from across the country visiting. This piled the pressure on his young mind.

Stephen Curry was encouraged by his mother to keep going

Curry’s mom, Sonya Curry knew the taunts that her son was facing. She heard all the noise that he can’t dunk and he wasn’t tall or big enough. Meanwhile, Curry was to play at a travel-team tournament that happened in Las Vegas. It was full of Division 1 coaches of the best colleges in the country. Curry felt this pressure, and he had a bad game. He came back to the game dejected as he felt like he had lost his chance.

He asked his mom if he had messed up his chance. Sonya said, “My heart just broke. It was a learning lesson for me as a parent, to just back up and let it be.”

Curry still remembers what happened to this day. He said, “She told me to keep my head up and keep working, that I might not see it now but that someone is watching how I handle the situation.”

It eventually worked out for Curry as he got an offer from Davidson. And then he got drafted in the 2009 draft. He hasn’t looked back since then. In fact, he is one of the faces of the league today and is a generational talent. Even though he struggled to follow in his dad’s footsteps at the start.
