Days After Mourning Heartbreaking Loss, Grateful Magic Johnson Makes “Private” Ceremony Announcement

The world turned upside down for Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson when he recently lost his biggest role model, his father. As the Johnson family takes their time going through the grieving process, Magic was compassionate enough to share certain thoughts and updates with fans amid the tough times. Shortly after the NBA legend shocked the world with the news of his father’s demise, the Johnson family made a big announcement with the intention of keeping the legacy of Earvin Johnson Sr. alive. Magic recently took to social media to announce a private ceremony in his father’s honor.

Earvin Johnson Sr. was 88 years old when he passed away at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital on March 8. The father of one of the greatest basketball players of all time is survived by his children and wife of 60 years, Christine.

Magic Johnson updates fans on father’s passing

Following the unfortunate demise of his dad, Magic Johnson recently took to Twitter to give an update. The Hall of Famer tweeted that the Johnson family would be hosting a private service in honor of his father. Magic’s tweet also read that the funeral service would be held in Michigan in the presence of their close ones.

Johnson wrote, “We are celebrating the life and legacy of my father with a private funeral service in Lansing, Michigan this week for our family and closest friends.”

In a social media post that Magic uploaded on his father’s 88th birthday last year, he mentioned in his caption that his dad was his role model. The 5x NBA champion wrote a heartfelt message where he thanked his dad for “giving me my work ethic both on and off the court, and for always encouraging me to think outside the box and dream big.”

Lakers legend expressed his gratitude

Shortly after Magic Johnson broke the news of his father’s death, he announced that the Johnson siblings had started a scholarship fund to honor their dad’s legacy. The ‘Earvin Johnson Sr. Scholarship Fund’ was created to help minority kids from Michigan State University, which happens to be Magic’s alma mater.

Days after making the announcement, Magic tweeted to thank the fans for sending their wishes to the Johnson family. Additionally, the 12x NBA All-Star expressed his gratitude to the donors of the new scholarship fund.

Evidently, the MSU scholarship fund is not the only charitable foundation that Johnson has created. About three decades before creating the new scholarship program, the Lakers legend founded ‘The Magic Johnson Foundation’ back in 1991. Its main purpose is to help organizations tackle the various societal issues that several communities face.
