The four-team trade reunited the Warriors with Payton in exchange for James Wiseman, who was sent to the Detroit Pistons. Simultaneously, the Trail Blazers acquired Kevin Knox II from the Pistons, and the Atlanta Hawks landed Saddiq Bey.

Gary Payton II underwent core muscle surgery during the 2022 offseason shortly after getting traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. Since then, Payton has been suffering from pain due to the surgery and has relied on Toradol to get through the games. GP2 spoke to the media for the first time after getting traded, where he talked about his dependency on the painkiller.

According to Kendra Andrews of ESPN, Payton said, “That was me being a competitor, just wanting to get out there. No shots, though. Just had to get through it and get it done. The medical stuff wasn’t that big of a deal. I wanted to play and go out there and help my teammates and coaches.”
Furthermore, he added, “I was a bigger factor on the court than off the court. Me being 50% was better than nothing. I just had to get out there and help my team try to win.”

Following the physical examination, the 2022 NBA champion could reportedly be sidelined for two or three months. Upon discovering the outcome of the test, the Warriors held up the trade deal and filed a complaint against the Blazers to the league.
