Earlier in the week, Hall of Fame Coach George Karl made a claim on Twitter. He declared Michael Jordan to be the goat while also stating that if Jordan were playing in today’s day and age, he’d probably have an average of 40 points per game. This didn’t sit well with the NBA community, leading to an outburst of dislike and chaos toward Coach Karl. Despite it being almost a week since this incident, the attention around it has failed to subside. With that said, now Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson has been added to the narrative.

George Karl has seen the game and its players evolve and grow through the years. Furthermore, he has coached players like Glenn Robinson, Ray Allen, and Sam Cassell. However, in the 25+ years of coaching, Karl has never won a championship title. But this doesn’t undermine his position to talk about the game and the players at a high level nor does it undermine his opinion about the league. However, his credibility posed as nothing for fans over the course of the week.

It seemed like Coach Karl had taken this backlash with a pinch of salt as he responded to the heat on Twitter. While trying to douse the fire, he once again created a rift between fans and himself. He wrote, “Learned this week there are four simple words to really piss off Lakers fans:  Michael is the GOAT”.

While fans were left in shambles, this tweet caught the eye of a musician worth $150 million. Flea, an Australian-American artist, responded to Karl’s tweet and claimed to disagree with the Veteran Coach while bringing Magic Johnson into the narrative. Flea states that he “would rather build a team around Magic Johnson at his peak than peak Jordan any day always and forever.”

As this response gained attention, Coach Karl quickly typed out a reply. While admitted to being a fan of Flea’s music group ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’, Karl explained why Johnson couldn’t be termed as the greatest. Karl commented that despite his love for the NBA Legend, Johnson’s defensive abilities weren’t the best. Hence Jordan had the edge over Johnson as well.

While Flea doesn’t have the credibility of someone like Coach Karl, he has been a fan of the game for years now. He has been a loyal member of the Los Angeles Lakers fan base and is seen courtside on several occasions. Additionally, during certain times, the musician has put his basketball skills to show via Instagram posts.

In 2022, Flea took to Instagram to share a video of himself during the ‘Rock N’ Jock’ celebrity basketball game. Conducted in 1995, Flea is seen making 3 three-point shot back-to-back. He captioned this video, “I made 6 in a row and won that shit, didn’t even need to shoot the last one. Tell me somethin good”.
