As the era of Michael Jordan came to an end. The entire world was looking for a talent to carry on the baton. LeBron James entered the NBA as the first draft pick for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. It has been almost two decades since ‘King James’ ruled the sport and there seems to be no stopping him anytime soon. However, it is certain that the Los Angeles Lakers legend will retire in the coming years.
Then once again the hunt for another young icon to become the next face of the league will begin. And it looks like the answer has already been found. French sensation Victor Wembanyama continues to make headlines in the media and has become one of the hottest topics for fans to discuss. Many believe that the 7’4″ giant will most likely be the overall number-one pick in the 2023 NBA draft.
A comment made by LeBron James’ ex-teammate sparked a debate on Twitter
NBA Central tweeted a statement by Richard Jefferson, an ESPN analyst, and former basketball player who played alongside James with the Cavs. The tweet said, “Richard Jefferson says LeBron James would go No. 2 in a draft with Victor Wembanyama.”
Some NBA fans don’t seem to agree with the 2016 NBA champion’s statement and they went on to present their views on social media.
Here are some of the reactions from NBA Twitter:
No question correct if we’re talking about them both as teens and not making proclamations that VW will eclipse LBJ

RJ would go undrafted in this era

No he wouldn't. Bron is a 6'9 power forward that play every position, his body was NBA ready, Victor's is not. He's not coming into the league dominating like you think. Going to be great, but he's not like Bron coming in. Bron was great day 1. Calm down, don't pressure the kid.

That's too simplistic. Scouts look at significant physical attributes. It's usually, but not limited to height. LeBron had a big body was 6'8 and otherworldly athletic. That, plus his NBA ready skills are what made him a top prospect.

He’s probably right. Look at who was drafted before Jordan. The league has forever been infatuated with height.

Victor Wembanyama’s towering height and skills can arguably bend the outcomes of a game in his team’s favor. Even the greats are talking about him, with LeBron James calling the 18-year-old an “alien” after recently seeing him play. With his promising talent and recent performances, he is already being compared to the greats before even making his NBA debut. Incidentally, a similar situation occurred when a kid from Akron, Ohio was drafted straight out of high school in 2003.
