WNBA Brittney Griner is fighting for her freedom in Russia after she was detained at a Moscow Airport in February. The Phoenix Mercury center had a rough childhood as she often found herself different from other kids. Griner opposed the things that normal kids did, and it was difficult for her to understand why she was different. The 2014 WNBA champ revealed in her biographical memoir that she often rebelled against wearing girly clothes. She also talked about her mother’s failed attempts at fashion and the lack of support from her father during her childhood days.

In 2014, Brittney Griner released her memoir titled In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court. Griner talked about her childhood days, her struggles exploring her sexuality, the criticism she faced, and her journey to becoming a WNBA star in the book.

Brittney Griner opposed her mother’s choice of clothes

In one of the chapters, Griner stated that the boys’ section intrigued her more while shopping for school. She preferred T-shirts over pretty pink blouses and skirts that her mother tried to make her wear. As a kid, Griner ripped out the little laces of the socks and turn them into regular ones.?

Further, Griner’s mother would pick something nice out of the girl’s section but she always refused. Eventually, Sandra realized that she could not make BG wear anything that she did not like and let the WNBA star pick her own stuff. Brittney Griner wrote,?“My mom could never put me in a dress because I would mess it up so fast.”

Sandra couldn’t make Brittney wear her choice of clothes because of the lack of support from Griner’s father. BG’s father did not care what she wore during her childhood days. He was aware that it would be difficult for Griner to help him do things outside the house in dresses and skirts.

Griner liked being a rebel

Moreover, BG shared that she wore an orange shirt with punk rock characters all the time until it was too tight to wear. The eight-time All-Star also loved her pair of overalls. BG added, “I wore one strap up, one strap down. I thought I was cool. (I wasn’t.) And I love being a rebel.”
