WNBA star Brittney Griner was the first openly gay athlete to be endorsed by sports apparel giants Nike. The towering center signed a $1 million offer from Nike. However, it has not been an easy path for the 2-time Olympic gold medalist. She worked with?ESPN The Magazine?s 2015 Body Issue. During the interview that followed, Griner opened up about a lot of things. She talked about the abuses she had to endure, her body, her growth spurt, how she came out to her parents, etc.

The Phoenix Mercury star said that she is now comfortable with her body. However, she was sure that the body issue photos will garner a lot of negative comments. She said that she likes the way she is unique and said that if everyone looked the same, it would not be interesting.

During the interview, Griner also disclosed that she had received a lot of hurtful comments about her appearance. She said that people have said that she is not female but a male because of her physical appearance. Griner also said that she has felt like she is on display in a museum because of the people staring at her wherever she goes.

Brittney Griner also talked about coming out to her parents when she was young. She said, “Coming out to my parents helped. I gave myself little steps I would do, and each time I got good feedback-or I didn’t get any feedback, which was good, because nobody really cared. Just little steps. Like in ninth grade, I decided I’m just going to dress how I want to dress.”

The towering center said that she thinks she has bigger feet than NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. She also said that she has bigger hands than NBA superstar LeBron James. Also, the wingspan of the 6’8″ Griner is more than James and former NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

She then talked about the mind-boggling growth spurt she went through in high school where she grew 7 inches. Griner said that she had to bear extreme knee pain because of the growth spurt and had a tough time sitting through classes. She also said that the sudden increase in her height made her a bit clumsy and had bad coordination even though she has always been athletic.
