Recently, Shaquille O’Neal shared a video on how the Chinese government regulates their social media app “TikTok” for children under the age of 14. The video had information that explained that the Chinese version of the app only had videos that were related to educational experiences for U-14s. ‘Douyin’ is the name of the Chinese version, which has a ‘youth mode’.
There is a huge difference in how 14-year-olds consume content between China and the USA. The young US audience is treated to recreational videos whereas the young Chinese audiences are treated to content that is educational. Compared to the mandatory time limits of the Chinese version, the US version regulations are voluntary. The Chinese version has a time limit of 40 minutes per day if you are under 14 years old.
