NBA legend Charles Barkley recently had a podcast appearance on “The Sessions with Renee Paquette”. During the course of The Sessions podcast, Charles Barkley talked about a lot of things, including the documentary ‘The Last Dance’.
The Last Dance documentary encapsulated Michael Jordan’s fight for his six NBA championships. It was an amazing documentary. It showed all the highs and lows the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan had to go through to establish their dominance.

However, while talking about the documentary, Charles Barkley expressed hate over the creation of super teams in the NBA. The modern NBA is characterized by the formation of super teams. Here, the best players try to pair with other exceptional players to win a championship.
Charles Barkley does not appreciate this. He himself has struggled in the NBA and has seen other exceptional players struggle as well. However, during his time, no one has ever abandoned their team to pair up with another superstar. Charles Barkley says “a lot of these guys, they don’t wanna compete. They all get together, and that’s annoying. I hate these guys playing together instead of fighting through like a Dirk Nowitzki did.”
His frustration is acceptable since sometimes it gets too monotonous if a super team keeps dominating the league individually.
Super teams in the NBA
Charles Barkley is correct in dissing LeBron James and Kevin Durant super teams since it is unfair to the entire league. However, it is not a modern NBA phenomenon. Super teams existed in the league before this era too. Michael Jordan himself played with Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman in Chicago Bulls.

Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant dominated the league together for quite a few years. Sometimes it is not up to the players at all, many trade decisions are made by franchise executives. It is true that Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors to create a super team and win a championship. However, competition still exists, no matter what.

In the past decade, many teams have won the championship that would not be considered super teams. This includes Kawhi Leonard’s Toronto Raptors. Additionally, this would include Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s Milwaukee Bucks.

The creation of super teams can sometimes harm the competition in the league. However, if it does not hamper competition, there should be no issue. Players have the right to join whatever team they like. Restricting them to do so would be extremely barbaric.
