Only a handful of names qualify for an argument where a player has been able to outshine Michael Jordan in a game. Iconic names like Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, and Larry Bird usually come to mind. In the case of teams, the Utah Jazz were able to give the 90s Chicago Bulls some competition back then. But rarely do we hear about someone dropping 50 points on Michael Jordan. Therefore, Shaquille O’Neal was quick to point out the name of this relatively unknown player who once dropped 50 on His Airness, leaving NBA fans stunned.

The incident might be tied to arguably one of the biggest mistakes made by the Boston Celtics. This is the story of a Greek player named Nick Galis who was once drafted by the Boston Celtics but was let go during the preseason itself.

Nick Galis was drafted 68th overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. However, an injured ankle cost him his spot on the team. Galis went to play professionally in Greece, where his family hailed from.

He went on to become one of the greatest European players ever, winning eight titles in the Greek league and leading the league in scoring for 11 straight seasons. In 2017, Galis was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. But one of the highlights of his career came against Michael Jordan. The Greek national team played an exhibition game against North Carolina, when MJ was a junior in college. Galis finished the night with 50 points while Jordan only had 34. This forgotten story even drew the attention of Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal, who posted a video regarding the incident on his Instagram stories.

Fans had a hard time accepting the fact that the Boston Celtics let the talented player go. One fan commented, ?I know the guy? Boston Celtics biggest mistake.?

Another fan commented, ?Just goes to show the American sense of world dominance is overblown. You wouldn?t wanna see an NBA dominated by euro players.?

Meanwhile, a lot of fans argued that this game happened before Michael Jordan really blossomed into his prime. Given that Jordan was just a junior in college, he still managed to drop 34 points. That too against a player who had already been drafted by one of the most iconic franchises in the league.

Now, one could argue that this may have been one of the Celtics’ biggest mistakes in the past. Luckily, the team was blessed with talents like Larry Bird, who was drafted a year before Nick Galis.?
