What is life like in penal colonies?

Brittney Griner is possibly being subjected to some of the roughest conditions in the world. The Russian penal colonies are considered modern-day concentration camps, where inmates bear inhumane conditions and torture. Moreover, former inmates have suggested that prisoners deal with slave-like treatment and are forced to work 16-17 hours a day, without any proper food or sleep.

Meanwhile, homophobia and racism are quite common in penal colonies and torture is not unheard of. The colonies have poor medical facilities and inmates often lose their fingers to dangerous and old sewing machines.
