One of the biggest concerns that were raised while Brittney Griner was in a Russian prison is the WNBA salaries. Players are paid low amounts compared to their male counterparts which force them to take their talents elsewhere. This is precisely the reason why Griner was in Russia in the first place. Following her release, a WNBA official assured her that work will be done to get these issues sorted.
According to sources, Terri Jackson, Women’s National Basketball Players Association executive director touched upon some of the issues that are crippling the WNBA currently.

Following her release, WNBA official Terri Jackson has assured of changes. She said, “Travel concerns in the W. Pay equity in the W. I think those are issues that have been further underscored throughout this ordeal. We need to ramp up all efforts to address these concerns.”
Wages have been a long-standing issue concerning the WNBA and efforts have ramped up following the scale at which the Brittney Griner issue was covered.
Interestingly enough, she was paid a full season’s salary while she was locked in a Russian cell. This helped her add around $227,000 to her $5 million net worth.
