Nobody outside the Russian penal system is aware of WNBA star Brittney Griner’s whereabouts. The Phoenix Mercury center was transferred to an unknown facility in Russia on November 9. Even her lawyers and the US diplomats who were concerned with her situation are unaware of her location. The troubling scenario of Brittney Griner getting lost somewhere in vast Russia would certainly trouble her supporters, praying for her safe return.

It is believed that Brittney Griner is in the process of relocation which could take weeks. Thus, it could take a while before her final destination would be revealed. Unfortunately, BG would likely end up in a Russian penal colony infamous for inhumane conditions and forced labor. The process of relocation began after her appeal was recently denied by a Russian court.

Griner has been stuck in Russia for over eight months. She was first detained at a Moscow Airport in February after the discovery of vape cartridges filled with cannabis oil in her luggage.

BG’s punishment was significantly stricter than the normal penalties handed in Russia for cannabis possession. Usually, the offender receives a 15-day jail and a small fine.

Brittney Griner to face harsh conditions in Russian penal colony

Brittney Griner is hidden somewhere in vast Russia at this moment. She is in the process of being sent to a crowded and old penal colony where she could face some extremely harsh conditions. Griner could be forced to work in labor camps in penal colonies. Thus, the lack of information about Griner’s current location could be quite concerning for her supporters and loved ones.

According to a recent report, “For the moment, Griner is marooned somewhere in vast Russia, likely headed toward a cramped, aging facility where conditions are sure to be particularly harsh.”

Notably, the BG situation is so critical that even POTUS Joe Biden mentioned it in his post-election conference on Wednesday. President Biden hoped that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin would take prison negotiations more seriously after the elections.

The State Department had offered a prisoner swap deal for Griner and US marine Paul Whelan in exchange for a convicted Russian arms dealer. However, the verdict of the BG case had shocked the Biden Administration, which then deemed her imprisonment as ‘wrongful detainment’. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has remained silent about the prison swap deal for quite some time now.
