Brittney Griner is in exile in Russia since February. Currently, she is facing a sentence of up to nine years in prison. While a prisoner swap between the US and Russia has not worked out for the WNBA superstar yet, she will get an appeal hearing scheduled for October 25. The eight-time WNBA All-Star could potentially serve her sentence at penal colonies where daily labor of up to 17 hours a day and inhuman conditions are quite common. However, Griner could avoid such miserable situations due to her proven expertise in sports.

Brittney Griner is fighting for her freedom and is slowly beginning to lose hope. The fear of working for long hours in a Russian labor camp is not lost on Griner. The 2014 WNBA champ was detained at a Moscow Airport after authorities discovered vape cartridges filled with cannabis oil in her belongings.
Griner was charged with drug possession and smuggling charges. Subsequently, she was sentenced to nine years in prison following her guilty plea. Griner now faces the threat of being forced to work in notoriously infamous Russian penal colonies. These prison-labor camps are the remains of the Soviet Union’s Gulag system.

The vice President of Russia’s department of International Human Rights gave some positive news regarding Griner’s sentence. Ivan Melnikov claimed that BG might be allowed “to coach basketball in the daytime rather than being a seamstress.”
In the past, Russian soccer players Alexander Kokorin and Pavel Mamayev coached inmates while serving their sentences. Thus, if Griner ends up under a lenient governor, she could end up coaching instead of being treated inhumanely in labor camps.
