Brandon Miller is one of the top NBA prospects in the country and is projected to go top-5 in the 2024 NBA draft. He recently won both player and freshman of the year awards in SEC, a feat which has not been matched in 12 years. Before stepping into the league, the forward is all set to lead the Alabama Crimson Tide for a deep run in the NCAA tournament. The Crimson Tide, who are likely to be a #1 seed, will be aiming for their first-ever Final Four appearance in history with the help of Miller. However, there are concerns and questions looming over Miller about the recent Alabama tragedy that shocked everyone.

On Jan.15, 2023, Jamea Harris, mother of a five-year-old boy, was murdered near the Alabama University campus. According to reports, Darius Miles handed the gun to his friend, Michael Davis, who shot and killed Jamea Harris. Miles and Harris were charged with capital murder. However, there were allegations that Brandon Miller initially delivered the gun to Miles. Miller has not been charged and his attorney Jim Standridge has denied the claims.

After a blowout win against LSU on Jan.14, Miles asked Miller for a ride to Tuscaloosa’s entertainment district. According to a report from The Washington Post, Standridge said that Miles left his legal handgun in Miller’s car when the latter dropped him at a bar. The attorney further stated that Miller did not see the gun or handle it. He added that Miller was unaware that Miles left the weapon in his car. The two then went their separate ways, but Miller later returned to pick up Miles from the bar.

The report states that Jamea and her boyfriend Cedric Johnson were dancing near their car when Miles approached them. When Johnson told Miles that Harris is not interested in him, tensions flared. But things are not clear about what happened next.

Miller’s attorney’s statement

Branden Culpepper, a police investigator testified that Darius Miles texted Brandon Miller to bring the firearm and Miller brought it. According to the report, ““Mr. Miles texted Brandon and asked him to bring him his firearm,” Standridge said in a statement. “Brandon subsequently arrived at the scene to pick up Mr. Miles.””

Also, Miller and teammate Jaden Bradley’s vehicles were reportedly parked blocking the road where Harris’ vehicle was parked at the time. After Miller arrived in his car, Miles and Michael Davis reportedly got in the backseat. The report also states that Miles and Davis talked about the firearm. However, Standridge argued that Miller did not know about the conflict and was unaware of the illegal activity that was going to occur.

As per the report, Davis grabbed the gun from the vehicle and fired into the car killing Harris. Davis and Miles have been charged with capital murder. Miller and Brady were not charged and do not face possible charges.

Charles Barkley heartbroken amidst backlash for Miller

Brandon Miller has been playing at the highest level for Alabama and is averaging 19.5 points per game. However, his alleged involvement in the tragic murder has been the biggest talking point in games. The Crimson Tide received major backlash for allowing Miller to play amidst the allegations.

In the game against South Carolina, rival fans booed him the whole game and there were also chants of “lock him up”. Furthermore, his actions added fuel to the fire. Before a game against Arkansas, Miller’s pregame introduction received heavy criticism. However, Miller stated that he is heartbroken about the murder of Jamea Harris, when he recently talked to the reporters.
