Michael Jordan is one of the most competitive personalities when it comes to not only basketball but the sports fraternity. The way he conducted himself, and his mentality are all part and parcel of his competitiveness. Although, sometimes, MJ can arguably go a little overboard with his competitiveness and urge to win.

While it has made him one of the greatest athletes of all time and gotten him fans all over the globe, it has also made him lose many friendships and bonds because of that. He has also picked up many haters as a result. Here is a story about how Jordan’s competitiveness made him fake his friendship.

Michael Jordan and his gift to Charles Barkley

Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were playing against Charles Barkley and the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Finals of 1993. Both teams were relatively equally and evenly matched with great names on both teams.

Michael Jordan and the Bulls were looking to complete their three-peat, and in front of them stood the ‘Chuck’ wall. Michael Jordan then did something in that series that might come as a shock to everyone. Jordan and Chuck were great friends going into the series.

Both Jordan and Barkley entered the 1984 NBA Draft together, and both were destined for greatness. However, this series was gonna change everything. Prior to Game 4 of the Finals, Michael Jordan gifted a diamond earring worth $20,000 to Chuck. Although considering their friendship, a gift like that would be considered normal.

However, in reality, Jordan’s intentions behind giving it were different. Jordan had later come and told the assistant coach what he’d done and said that Chuck won’t come in their way anymore. This gesture hurt Charles Barkley later.

While it can only be speculated whether or not the $20,000 earring had anything to do with the Chicago Bulls beating the Phoenix Suns in the Finals of 93. One thing we know for sure is that Michael Jordan lived to win and he would go to any limits to achieve that.
