On the occasion of Father’s Day, most NBA fathers are embracing their families. However, for LeBron James, the day means a lot more. Back in 2016, the King was facing off against the record-breaking Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. After coming up short in the previous season, James and the Cleveland Cavaliers were down 3-1.
But with their relentless attitude and belief, they pulled off one of the most impossible comebacks in sports history. Now six years later, LeBron sent out his appreciation for late iconic Cavs announcer Fred D. McLeod III and Austin Carr.

While in the NBA, players take the spotlight, there are also people behind the cameras who put in their all for the love of the game. And one such man was Fred D. McLeod III. Growing up in Cleveland, Fred had sports coursing through his veins. He spent most of his life as an NBA announcer for the Detroit Pistons and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Notably, he was also the voice in the closing second of the iconic 2016 NBA Finals. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers’ long-time announcer passed away in 2019, leaving a hole in many hearts. Even LeBron James was left deeply saddened as the announcer was set to start his 15th season with the Cavaliers.
Now, on the day of the iconic Game 7 between Cleveland and the Golden State Warriors, an emotional LeBron James remembered Fred and his announcing partner Austin Carr.

In 2016, the lights were closing out on Cleveland sports once again. Another NBA title was vanishing right in front of their eyes as the Warriors were up 3-1. However, LeBron James was not ready to let this one go just yet.

Fred and Austin Carr, both huge fanatics of Cleveland, got to witness history right in front of their eyes. Moreover, not only them but the King’s two sons Bronny and Bryce also saw their father pull off a historic feat on Father’s Day. Years later, remembering the iconic day, James felt the absence of Fred. He wrote, “I miss you Fred!!! Love you and AC [forever] and ever!! A Fathers Day to remember FOREVER!!!”
