Roger Carstens brought Griner back to the United States from the United Arab Emirates and spent around 18 hours with the WNBA superstar. She spent a long time talking with the diplomats and it left a good impression on them.

US diplomat talks about meeting Brittney Griner

Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner spent 10 months in Russia and the officials played a huge role in ensuring she comes back home. US diplomat Roger Carstens brought Griner back to the United States from the UAE after she was released by Russia.

They spent around 18 hours together on the long flight back home. Interestingly enough, instead of resting during this time, she was talking with the other people on the flight.

This left a great impression on the people and especially Roger Carstens. He said, “I was left with the impression that this is an intelligent, passionate, compassionate, humble, interesting person, a patriotic person, but above all, authentic.”

Griner is currently at a Texas Military Station where she is being treated both physically and mentally. She will be joining her family and friends shortly.

Griner’s patriotism has been questioned in the past

Brittney Griner made headlines a few years ago following some controversial comments about the National Anthem. The Breonna Taylor incident gripped the country and she proposed the national anthem not be played before WNBA games.

She said, “I honestly feel we should not play the national anthem during our season. I think we should take that much of a stand.” Her stance resurfaced recently following her arrest.

People around the world felt the Government should not put in an effort for her due to her alleged ‘Anti-American’ views. Regardless, the Joe Biden administration successfully negotiated a swap deal to bring her home.
