The NBA during the ’90s was synonymous with one man, Michael Jordan. Regarded as the GOAT by many, the Chicago legend was a menace to the game of Basketball. Not only did Jordan win 6 championships, he stopped many NBA greats from getting their hands on one. Stars such as Karl Malone, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing all fell to the greatness of Michael Jordan.

If not for Shaquille O’Neal, another NBA legend could have easily found himself on this list. Shaq, who is known to be a person that helps those in need, surely was a messiah in this instance too, being the one responsible for bringing the player to a championship winning team. If not for the big man, it would have been easier for this legend to fall into obscurity.

In the year 2006 the Miami Heat clinched their first ever championship under the stewardship of Patt Riley. Although the centerpieces of the organization were a young D Wade and Shaq, it was Gary Payton who remained the unsung hero.

Speaking on the Big podcast, Shaq revealed, “When we started to get older in our career and like I needed a tough point guard, I am like I need G.” While the two first suited up together for the Lakers, it was their second stint together that holds greater significance. Going further, Shaq recalled how GP first didn’t like the idea of suiting up together in Miami. “I called him one time and said I need you in Miami,” to which Payton replied, “Man, I don’t want to do that s**t.”

The pair did eventually come together and won a championship against Dirk Nowitzki’s Dallas Mavericks. Shaq talked about the symbiotic relationship the two shared in Miami stating, “You helped me win my 4th Championship and I helped you get your first.”

The legendary Payton

Although best known for his trash-talking, Gary Payton was much more than just words during his time. Selected as the second overall pick during his draft, the point guard had a long and successful career in the league. He was Jordan’s biggest defensive nemesis and did what most of Jordan’s rivals couldn’t – win an NBA championship.
