NBA legend Charles Barkley was one of the best players of his generation and made the NBA 50 and 75-anniversary teams. Despite his lack of length for a power forward, Barkley excelled and dominated his opponents. The Philadelphia 76ers legend was one of the most fierce competitors as well and did not back down from any challenge. Moreover, he won the 1993 NBA MVP award over a prime Michael Jordan. Even though he did not win a championship, he still had a legendary playing career.
However, had someone told Barkley’s late mother, Charcey Glenn, that her son would accomplish all this in the future, she would not have believed it as the Hall of Famer was in a life-threatening situation after he was born.

Charles Barkley struggled with weight gain throughout his NBA career and after retiring as well. He received a lot of criticism for this and many felt that he was not consuming a healthy diet. However, his struggle with weight started at a very stage. When he was born, Barkley weighed just over six pounds and was very slim. According to a report from Sports Illustrated, the newborn Barkley had severe anemia and his condition was considered serious when he was six weeks old. So the doctors then had to give him a blood transfusion.
Understandably, it was a tough time for Barkley’s parents. However, they were relieved once he recovered. In the 11-time NBA All-Star’s documentary, his mother, Charcey Glenn, revealed her astonishment at his recovery. According to the documentary posted by a fan account on YouTube, Glenn said, “He had to have blood transfusion when he was about three days old. Sometimes I wonder what kind of blood was in the transfusion.”
