It may not seem like it on the surface, but all’s not well in the ‘Shaq World’. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal may have remained a constant presence on social media platforms and Inside the NBA episodes, but he is currently neck-deep in legal trouble. The former Los Angeles Lakers superstar found himself in a mess after FTX went bankrupt in November 2022. It has been five months since the world witnessed the crypto exchange company’s downfall and the Big Aristotle’s reputation seems to be in jeopardy, as he has now been accused of threatening a lawyer’s wife.

Shortly after the company collapsed, it was reported that about $8.9 billion in customer funds is missing. This led to a huge uproar from the victims who immediately filed a class-action lawsuit against the company executives and influential figures, including Shaq, who promoted FTX.

Lawyers fail to serve Shaquille O’Neal

Shortly after the case was filed, individuals named in the lawsuit were served the papers by the plaintiffs’ lawyers, except Shaquille O’Neal. According to them, the 4x NBA champion has been reportedly ‘hiding in his home’ to dodge service. Legal representatives have repeatedly tried to serve Shaq with the legal notice but with no success.

Shaq happens to be the only defendant who is yet to be served. Incidentally, it is necessary to serve the papers of the lawsuits to the defendant in person for the legal proceedings to commence. And Shaq has been reportedly taking advantage of that loophole despite the possibility of annoying the judge.

Michael Popok, a lawyer and a podcast host, said that the authorities have tried 20 times to serve Shaq, but each time the 15x NBA All-Star has managed to elude them. Popok stated, as per The Block, “Twenty attempts is a bit much. He will get served eventually, and it’s just annoying the judge before he even steps into the courtroom. Bad form.”

Shaq allegedly threatened a lawyer’s wife

As if the lawsuit was not a big enough issue, Shaquille O’Neal was also accused of threatening a lawyer’s wife after the legal executive tried to deliver the papers to the basketball legend in his Texas home.

As per the court filings displayed by The Block, one of the servers received a threat via a text message with mention of his wife’s name. The file read, “After the eighth attempt, Plaintiffs; process server in Texas received a text message later that night, stating ‘shaq lives in the Bahamas u stupid f*ck give Beth Shaw my regards’.”
