Journalist and friend of Michael Jordan, Sam Smith, released the book ‘The Jordan Rules’ in 1991. The book chronicled the 1990-91 title-winning season of the Chicago Bulls. There were some interesting details in the book which would pique the minds of any basketball fan. Legendary head coach Phil Jackson is known for his unique coaching style and success. The book touched on some of his methods as well. While talking about Jackson’s method to improve the free-throw performance, it looked at Wilt Chamberlain’s only potential disadvantage.

Chamberlain, despite his legendary performances and Himalayan records, was a poor free-throw shooter. He was not happy about it. So if someone talked about it, it angered him. The author talked about an incident when Chamberlain spat on a fan.

Wilt Chamberlain’s anger

Explaining Wilt Chamberlain‘s anger, Sam Smith wrote, “He was an angry giant when he played. Once asked by a fan, ‘How’s the weather up there?’ Chamberlain said, ‘It’s raining,’ and then he spit on him.”

However, the legend can also joke about his free throw issues. The author noted, “‘I went to a psychiatrist once about my free-throw shooting,’ Chamberlain deadpanned to reporters. ‘After six months I was still all screwed up, but the psychiatrist could make ten of ten'”

Even though Phil Jackson was not aware of this joke, he was not joking when he asked some of the Bulls stars to see a psychologist. The players were Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, and Stacey King. The coach felt all had poor concentration and made appointments for each one. However, Pippen and Grant canceled their appointments and King did not show up, noted the author.

Michael Jordan was not happy with his teammates

The book also talked about the frustration of Michael Jordan with his teammates. It is well established that the six-time champion is not the best teammate. ‘The Last Dance’?showed that side of MJ as well where people and his teammates feared him. He has had altercations with his teammates as well. Notably with the Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.

The author talked about an instance when Jordan complained about his teammates after losing the first two games of the Eastern Conference Finals against rivals Detroit Pistons. He felt Pippen and Grant had the talent but were not serious. He thought others were not capable of much. The Bulls lost the series, losing three times in a row against the Pistons.

However, Jordan would have his revenge the next year as he swept the Pistons with the help of his teammates. The Bulls then went on to win three straight titles.
