The Golden State Warriors are in an interesting spot right now. One of their keystone players, Draymond Green, has chosen not to exercise his player option for the next season, officially entering free agency. The Warriors’ No. 23 has undoubtedly been one of the best players for the squad over the past decade. He was pivotal in each of the Warriors’ 4 championships since 2015.
As the situation with the 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year remains unclear, a former NBA champion has made some very bold comments about Draymond Green.

Draymond Green is not just known for his phenomenal defense but also for his off-court controversies. Most notably, punching his then-teammate Jordan Poole in the face during the last off-season. Many believe that one of the major reasons behind the Warriors’ disappointing playoff exit this year was because of the feud between Poole and Green. However, this didn’t stop 2008 NBA Champion Kendrick Perkins from praising the two-time Olympic gold medalist.
Kendrick Perkins, in response to a panelist who claimed Green is not worth a contract of $100 million, said, “Draymond is arguably one of the greatest defenders this game has ever seen… He’s invaluable.”
Perkins highly values Green and definitely thinks that the Dubs will be losing out on an important asset if the 6’6” forward doesn’t sign a new contract this off-season. Draymond joined Stephen Curry in Golden State after being picked no. 35 overall in 2012 and has since been a regular starter for them.
Freddie Coleman: "$100 million? Unless that contract is 10 years, Draymond Green is not a 100 million dollar player."

Steve Kerr gives his take on Draymond’s contract situation
Steve Kerr had some interesting insights to share when he was asked about his star defender. He said, “If Draymond?s not back, we?re not a championship contender?we know that?I mean, he is that important to winning and to who we are?so I absolutely want him back.”
He made it clear that the team needs Draymond back to reach their potential. With a flurry of changes since their second-round exit in the playoffs, the Warriors could certainly benefit from some continuity. Steph will also be hoping that his long-time teammate sticks around in San Francisco for the time being.

If Draymond returns on a financially reduced contract, the Warriors might be able to maneuver through free agency and land some more depth for their run at the 2024 NBA Championship.
