WNBA Star Brittney Griner is set to appeal her conviction in 15 days, as a Russian court set a date for her appeal. And with families and friends anxious about what may happen, a former New Mexico governor has dropped a huge hint on a possible release date.

Griner has been in Russia for over 200 days now and despite negotiations going on, there is still no substantial progress on her case. The WNBA star was arrested and sentenced to nine years in prison after undergoing trial in a Russian court. Many Americans believe that her trial was politically motivated and hence, unfair in delivering a verdict.

But former U.N ambassador to the UN, Bill Richardson actually has some huge news about Griner’s potential release. Richardson is a prominent U.S. diplomat, who specializes in helping American detainees and hostages overseas. He recently went to Russia to talk to high-level Russian officials, and has some massive news on Griner and former US Marine Paul Whelan.

The former governor was asked if he thought Griner and Whelan were coming back home by the end of the year. And he replied,” I do think so. Now, I hate making predictions, but yes.”

“I am cautiously optimistic,” he added.

As it turns out, Richardson has talked to Russian officials and has received some positive insight. However, he has refused to detail anything specific since he doesn’t represent the Biden administration.

This is massive news, as there had been no information about her possible release. The families of both Griner and Whelan will be eager after hearing this, as this means they can get to see their loved ones soon. They have been doing their best to rally support, and this will be a huge boost of confidence.
