Meanwhile, Wade’s ex-wife and Zaya’s mother, Siohvaughn Funches, reportedly filed an objection to the petition arguing that the NBA star didn’t inform her about the big step and is allegedly capitalizing on her child for financial expediency. However, after months of struggle, Wade’s petition for the name and gender change of his child was granted on Feb. 24, amid a lot of backlash from different circles. Meanwhile, a popular actress has recently revealed her strong opinions on the issue.

The three-time NBA champion’s kid is now officially Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade and her gender has also been officially changed to female. Wade and Union gave an emotional speech after this win during an award ceremony recently. It was met with both support and criticism from many on social media. Dwyane Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union gave a heartfelt speech during the 2023 NAACP Image Awards. This was after the gender and name change of Zaya was made official. Wade and Union received the President?s Award at the ceremony. They talked about equality and the struggles of Black transgender people in the country. ?We honestly don?t approach this work as activists or leaders as much as we do this as parents,? Union said. ?Parents who love our children and will do whatever the hell we can to keep them seen and secure and safe.??

The pair ended their speech with a huge round of applause from everyone in the ceremony.

Actress Leyna Bloom took to social media to show her support for Dwyane and Gabrielle. She wrote, “Being a black man in this world is so hard. But being a black man raising a black transgender daughter openly and freely that is powerful. Then communicating that to the world. That’s a new and unique type of strength. I have never seen something like this before.”

She added that she had never seen such a special cheer for something so powerful. Bloom also noted that this has opened the door for many possibilities for everyone in the African-American community.

Wade is not the first celebrity to openly support his transgender child. However, he was criticized heavily, especially on social media.
