After Saddening News, Lakers Legend Magic Johnson Pens Down a Heartfelt Note on His Father’s Legacy

Los Angeles Lakers icon Magic Johnson has often spoken about his father, Earvin Johnson, Sr., and the role he played in Magic’s own success. Several of the NBA legend’s interviews bear testimony to his father’s influence on his career. However, Johnson had to say a last goodbye to his 88-year-old dad last week, as Earvin Sr. passed away on March 9. The son has passionately shared his father’s legacy since then and penned down another heartfelt note today, delivering some promising news to keep his dad’s name alive.

The famous Laker came from a humble background, growing up with his six siblings and a father who made sure he brought up his kids to hold strong values. Johnson has emphasized his father’s belief in the youth and their education and how he understood the importance of a college degree.

A day after Earvin Johnson, Sr.’s demise, Magic Johnson announced a scholarship fund for minority groups at Michigan State University under his father’s name via a tweet. 

Former Laker Pau Gasol and various other sporting icons also shared their condolences with the Johnson family. The 5x NBA Champion Johnson shared pictures of his dad and penned down a tear-jerking note to his father via Twitter.  

Throughout his career, Magic Johnson has shared several childhood memories of his father, which helped shape his career and endow it with the discipline, consistency and hard work that both him and his father are famous for.

Now a week after the loss, Johnson posted a tweet after the homegoing service that sought to fulfill his father’s wishes and keep his legacy alive.

In a tweet today, Magic Johnson highlighted his promise to keep his father’s legacy alive. The tweet read, “He lived life to the fullest and left an incredible legacy behind…”

The tweet went on to announce a scholarship for African-American students attending Michigan State University, furthering Johnson’s father’s legacy. In keeping with his manner of sharing adorable anecdotes from his father’s life, Johnson also posted a tweet this time referring to his dad’s personality.

The tweet read, “…You could really see the impact he left in this world including his love for God, his love for family, how he treated people…”

Magic Johnson is a basketball legend and an NBA Hall of Famer who always had consistent figures on the stats-sheet during his career. Interestingly, for his commitment and consistency too he has his father to thank. Earvin Johnson, Sr. worked at General Motors for 30 years and even received an award for being punctual and for never taking an off. In a recent interview, Magic Johnson admitted that his dad’s career at General Motors taught him the lesson of being consistent.
