WNBA star Brittney Griner has been arrested in Russia for over 160 days now. After being detained on drug possession charges in February, Griner has been held in custody ever since. But there is new hope for Griner, as President Joe Biden and his administration seem to have offered a way out.

Ever since Griner was arrested, there have been numerous calls for her to be released. Several top athletes have come out and spoken out on her behalf and have requested the government to interfere. Top US officials have been in contact with Griner and the Russian authorities for a long time now, but nothing concrete had come out.

But now, there seems to be a deal offered by the US government for the release of Griner.

Attempts to bring Brittney Griner home continue

The Biden administration reported that they had made an offer for a prisoner swap for two American detainees in exchange for a Russian arms trafficker. Various reports suggest that Moscow is interested in this deal and will conduct talks about it soon. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that he would take this issue up with the Russian foreign minister on a call next week.

With the war in Ukraine going on, there has been very little communication between the two countries. Despite authorities making the offer, there seems to have been little progress in talks. But now it looks like there will be some progress after getting the go-ahead from the president.

The administration reported that the offer was made weeks ago, but that it was waiting for the backing of the president.

She is also the only player to record 200 points and 500 blocks in a single NCAA season. The WNBA has also been very vocal in supporting Griner, and players have been vocal in calling for her release.
