When legends and influential people speak and stand in solidarity with a social issue, it gets magnified and usually acts as a catalyst for change. In 2016, former San Franciso 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick made world headlines by kneeling during the national anthem. He kneeled to protest against social injustice and racial inequality. Other players from different sports soon followed his lead and took part, including LeBron James.

LeBron James announced that he was no longer a Dallas Cowboys fan. Their deafening silence and lack of action during trying times did not sit well with the NBA legend. During an Instagram Live with Maverick Carter, his close friend and business partner, he discussed his interests in the NFL.

He openly boycotted the Cowboys due to the lack of support for the national anthem protests. In fact, James was also upset about the fact that the players on the team were threatened and their jobs were put on the line if they kneeled during the anthem.

LeBron James stands up against the lack of action

Notably, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones kneeled with the players in 2017 but stood up when the anthem was played. He was emphatic that neither he nor his team would disrespect the flag. Jones and James did have a cordial relationship, once. The owner had also offered the basketball player a contract to play in the 2011 NBA lockout.

Although LeBron James does not root for the whole team anymore, he still roots for three players; CeeDee Lamb, Ezekiel Elliot, and Micah Parsons.

LeBron James admitted that his favorite team oscillated between Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns. Reports claim that his interest in the latter team was precisely because it was a team from his hometown.

LeBron James said that he was “all in” for the Browns.

A major reason behind the change in fandom could be that Browns players not only kneeled when the anthem was played, but they also prayed.
