The NBA has had some massive newsmaking events this season. While most of it relates to the incredible showcase of athleticism, some news pieces aren’t really good for the sport. While we’ve had investigations into firearms incidents on one hand, there are also unusual referee investigations on the other. Amidst all this, some of the biggest superstars of the game have chimed in on the discussion around the controversy. Recently, Shaquille O’Neal tried to get the NBA commissioner to say something about the ongoing investigation.

Another superstar with a connection to the LA Lakers, LeBron James has had his name brought up in this controversy. While Adam Silver tried to dodge the question asked by Shaq, it must’ve been a satisfying moment for the others.

The scandal over a burner account managed by former 76ers executive Bryan Colangelo in 2018 briefly overtook the hype and excitement of the NBA playoffs. After that, this year saw yet another controversy of a similar kind. Following complaints regarding his usage of social media, a league inquiry is focused on veteran NBA referee Eric Lewis. Lewis is about to end his 19th season as an NBA official. He has worked six NBA Finals games since 2019 and was also present during the Western Conference Finals. Given the impact and intensity of the issue, the controversy had to grow bigger and it did.

Lewis’s usage of an alleged burner account on a social account has created a controversy like no other in the NBA world. The experienced referee had officiated close to 1100 games and over 80 playoff matchups before this season. Now, with his name marred in controversy, even the NBA commissioner is refraining from speaking on it.

Despite that, Shaq asked Silver, “It was recently discovered on social media that one of your referees has a burner account. Can you explain to the fans why that would be a problem, if it is a problem at all?”
