Stephen Curry joined an array of athletes to have voiced their support for Brittney Griner. While hosting the ESPY Awards, the NBA superstar sent out a strong statement concerning the WNBA player’s illegal detention in Russia.
WNBA players Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith accompanied the human sniper in shifting focus to Griner’s situation.
“We cannot stop fighting for her,” Curry said. “We cannot stop believing for her. And we will not stop hoping for the day when we can welcome her home safely,” he added while donning Griner’s Mercury jersey.

Fellow WNBA player Ogwumike also went on to highlight all of Griner’s accomplishments on the hardwood. Skylar Diggins-Smith stated that it has been 153 nights since Griner was unlawfully detained in Russia. She also added that having her in their hearts and prayers isn’t enough to bring her back home.
Brittney Griner was detained at a Russian airport when cannabis oil in vape cartridges was seized from her luggage. The WNBA star pled guilty to drug charges earlier this month. She hasn’t been sentenced yet; however, if she is, she could be staring at 10 years behind the bars for “large-scale transportation of drugs.”

The three players then concluded the speech by saying “We Are BG.”
Like Stephen Curry, LeBron James also sent out a message on Griner’s situation
LeBron James, like Stephen Curry, joined the chorus of athletes who broke their silence on Brittney Griner’s situation. When asked about Griner on his show “The Shop,” he didn’t hold back with his comments. LeBron said, “Now, how can she feel like America has her back? I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even wanna go back to America?'”
While his comments were fairly harsh, for which James received a lot of backlash on social media, he later clarified his stance on Twitter. He explained that he loves his country and did not want to disrespect the nation.
He tweeted, “My comments on ‘The Shop’ regarding Brittney Griner wasn’t knocking our beautiful country. I was simply saying how she’s probably feeling emotionally along with so many other emotions, thoughts, etc inside that cage she’s been in for over 100+ days! Long story short #BringHerHome.”

The US government has come under fire for failing to bring back Brittney Griner from what the State Department has called wrongful detention. However, they have mentioned that it’s their “top priority” to bring the WNBA star back home safely.
