Victor Wembanyama is entering the NBA with nearly unprecedented hype. While his draft class is full of star-level talents, the top spot remains his. However, hand-in-hand with the hype comes skepticism. Even with a wholly unique skillset on offer, fans and legends alike have raised doubt over the French stalwart. While one would think that the skepticism is disgusted hate, the arguments are sound. When the consensus is that a top-15 career would be considered a disappointment, perhaps we’ve taken things a bit too far.

However, questioning his credentials as a prospect is something very few would do – but Agent Zero was never one to follow the mold anyway.

The one prospect with arguably the same level of hype was LeBron James. The track record for players making the jump from high school to the pros was terrible. With a few notable exceptions – KG, Kobe Bryant – high-school prospects usually fizzled out of the NBA.

Even in the case of Garnett and Kobe, they were late draftees who took time adjusting to the NBA level. For LeBron, the transition was easy. By his 2nd season, he was receiving MVP votes and in Year 4, reached the Finals. Drafted at 1 in 2003, the hype for James remains unmatched.

Gilbert Arenas used the same logic when comparing the two. After going after the NBA in regard to the Ja Morant situation, Arenas was back. Talking about his “greatest prospect” moniker, Gil offered his thoughts. “He can’t be a better prospect than LeBron technically.”?His arguments were simple.

Vic is being compared to Bron. James’ comparison, however, was Michael Jordan. So, if the GOAT argument remains on Jordan’s side, Wemby can’t be the best prospect as his comparison is LeBron. “LeBron was compared to Michael Jordan. You’re making LeBron 2…You’re just saying LeBron can’t be better than Jordan. And he’s compared to LeBron.”

Interestingly, in the Ja Morant situation too, Gil has a completely different mindset from the NBA.

Arenas addressed Morant’s situation, with particular emphasis on the unrealistic expectations placed on athletes. He further defended Morant’s firearm incident by asserting that no explicit rules governing such actions are in place.

According to Gilbert, the NBA does not have specific regulations dictating the behavior of athletes. He goes on to mention that the concept of “sportsman-like conduct” lacks a proper definition. The 41-year-old athlete doubled down, stating that an athlete’s responsibility is to safeguard their personal brand and refrain from engaging in foolish actions.

The NBA veteran expressed his reluctance to pass judgment based on hypothetical scenarios or actions that do not harm others. He believes individuals should have the freedom to make choices without condemnation for the potential consequences.

While a very privileged perspective, Arenas is free to his own opinion. Some, like the one about Wemby, make sense. Others, maybe not quite as much. However, Gilbert’s constant podcast appearances are a genuine treat and give basketball fans a lot of news to sink their teeth into over the summer. What are your views on Wemby as a prospect?
