Brittney Griner once revealed in an ESPN interview the struggles she faced with her body and outward appearance while growing up. In other words, she detailed the mistreatment and discrimination she tackled regularly for not having the physical appearance of a typical woman. However, Brittney Griner stated during the interview, that she loves her tall, athletic body and doesn’t pay heed to people’s unsolicited opinions.

In this ESPN The Magazine interview, Griner agreed to completely bare her body to show that she’s comfortable in her own skin. During the course of the conversation, the Phoenix Mercury star disclosed her struggles with stereotypical gender roles since childhood. In addition, she also shared the story of an unfortunate incident that happened to her in China.
Brittney Griner reveals being mistaken for a man in China
During the interview, Brittney Griner revealed that she was once confronted by a lady in a women’s washroom in China. As it turns out, the lady had mistaken the 2014 WNBA champion for a man. Therefore, she resorted to hysterics to force Griner out of the bathroom.
“One time when I went into the bathroom there, a lady was so shocked that she was pushing me out; she was so hysterically shocked that I was in there,” the 6’9″ center told the interviewer.
In response, Griner didn’t even try to explain her identity to the lady. Instead, she burst out laughing and went to a stall in the men’s bathroom.
The eight-time WNBA All-Star revealed that she is quite used to such treatment. In fact, she has been accosted a few times in the United States as well for similar reasons.

Meanwhile, Brittney Griner also opened up about fighting against gender norms from an early age.

According to the 31-year-old, she is comfortable in her own skin and loves her tall, slender physique. Furthermore, she doesn’t let other people’s opinions affect her self-perception. “People are either going to accept me for who I am or they’re not,” she declared.

Moreover, Brittney Griner also addressed her affinity toward a more androgynous existence. In other words, the hooper rejects stereotypical gender norms and enjoys both her feminine and masculine traits.
