Recently, the NBA gave a huge surprise to fans by renaming the most valuable player award after Michael Jordan – arguably the best player to ever step on the hardwood. Apart from that, the league also announced five other freshly designed trophies, renamed after the name of the other league legends. Hence, there are a total of six trophies that would get revamped and presented to worthy candidates at the end of the season. Incidentally, the recipient of the first Michael Jordan MVP award has been already decided and fans would find it difficult to guess the name of the 7′ superstar.

A lot of superstars are in contention of the MVP award this season. Superstars Jayson Tatum, Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo form the top three of the KIA MVP ladder following their brilliant showing in the season so far. However, none of these superstars will receive the first ever Michael Jordan MVP award.

Nikola Jokic is set to bag the first Michael Jordan MVP trophy

Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic will be getting his hands on the new Michael Jordan trophy as the MVP of the 2021-22 season. Last season, Jokic won the MVP award for the second consecutive time after having a terrific season. He also became the second international player to win it consecutively after Milwaukee Bucks superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo won it back in 2019 and 2020.

However, the Nuggets’ big man didn’t win it accidentally. His performance spoke volumes, leading him to get his hands on the trophy for the second time. Nikola Jokic became the first player in basketball history to record 2000 points, 1000 rebounds, and 500 assists in a single season.

In the previous season, he became the sixth player in NBA history to lead his team in points, assists, rebounds, blocks, and steals. Not to forget, he also averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 7.9 assists that season.

Therefore, with all these records under his name, the 7ft Serbian won the award by beating Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers last season. And now he would be the first active player to get his hands on the Michael Jordan trophy after his terrific last season. Besides that, if Jokic continues to play like this, then who knows, he might be able to win the trophy again.
