Shaquille O’Neal reveals how his friend and Orlando Magic teammate Dennis Scott helped him realize that he could get away with almost anything in the NBA. Dennis “3D” Scott made an appearance in the most recent episode of The Big Podcast with Shaq to talk about the good old days in the 90s with his old friend Shaquille O’Neal.

The Orlando Magic picked Dennis Scott fourth overall in the 1990 NBA draft. Therefore, he had already spent a couple of years in the organization when Shaq entered the league in 1992. As a result, Shaq relied a lot on Scott to get used to things in Orlando.

Shaquille O’Neal talks about his first days in Orlando

Shaquille O’Neal had no knowledge of how everything worked in the NBA. Therefore, Dennis Scott had to teach him the ways of the league. As a matter of fact, Scott was the first to help Shaq realize his actual value and worth in the franchise and the sport of basketball.

In fact, 3D told Shaq that he is the centerpiece of the organization and advised him to put his foot down on major decisions more often. “D-Scott was the one that encouraged me to enact change in the organization“, said the Lakers legend.

In the meantime, Shaq shared an interesting story with the audience. One day, the Big Man decided to take Dennis Scott’s advice and be more assertive. Therefore, he refused to practice that day making a silly excuse.

And to Shaq’s utter surprise, it worked like a charm. Nobody said anything to him and just accepted his decision. That’s when Shaq realized his true power in the franchise.
