On Tuesday, LeBron James went on to become the top scorer in NBA history with an unprecedented 38,888 points. Almost everyone predicted that James would achieve this feat by the first half of the season, and many witnessed the masterpiece live. Among the many, Los Angeles Lakers legend and previous holder of the record, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was also present. Since the record, James has been showered with gifts and honors by his family and the Lakers organization. However, he wasn’t the only one being honored, as the Lakers organization prepared a pretty spectacular gift for the legendary Abdul-Jabbar as well.

The LA franchise gifted Abdul-Jabbar a gold ring, adorned with 578 diamonds. It is a beautiful piece of jewelry intended to commemorate Abdul-Jabbar holding the top scorer record for almost 40 years. However, the spreading of the news on the Internet didn’t elicit the most favorable of reactions from fans.

As LeBron James hit the historic fade-away shot, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, aged 75, stood up to his feet to applaud the incredible achievement of the King. The Purple and Gold side understood the importance of the moment, as two of the most incredible players in history were donning the same jersey while expanding new horizons.

According to a report by TMZ, the LA side is gifting Abdul-Jabbar a gold ring studded with 578 diamonds. “The ring is made up of 578 flawless, round brilliant white diamonds set in yellow gold. The front features Kareem’s number 33, along with an image of his signature skyhook shot, which he used over Utah Jazz big man, Mark Eaton when he set the record, passing Wilt Chamberlain,” the report read.

As most would, fans gawked after learning about the ring as it was difficult news to process. However, some fans expressed their disbelief at the Lakers spending so much money on a gift. Here are some of the reactions.

The side of the ring has the no. 38, that is the no. of years the record was untouched. Shortly after James hit the fade-away shot,  the Lakers no. 33 embraced the four-time NBA champion for breaking the record. The six-time NBA Champion didn’t just stop there, as he wrote a heartfelt blog on King James’ astonishing achievement.

Abdul-Jabbar went back to his Substack and mentioned what his feelings were after months of listening to others speculating about it. Firstly, Cap decided to address the fact that he was not at all “bothered” by King James breaking his record, as his beloved friend Magic Johnson mistakenly thought. Moreover, he phrased it as two people winning the “lottery” 40 years apart, implying that he enjoyed the moment and now it was time for LeBron James to do the same.

Additionally, Cap mentioned how James’ achievement felt “glorious” as he made hundreds of thousands believe that it was possible. According to Abdul-Jabbar, it is important for any human to feel like that in their lifetime.
