NBA icon Michael Jordan is one of the one of the most bankable athletes in the world. When the popularity of Jordan was growing out of the roof, most brands tried to take advantage of the fame of the NBA legend. Notably, Jordan endorsed several brands, like Nike, McDonalds’, Gatorade, Hanes, Coca Cola, etc.
However, his engagement with Nike changed the dynamics of the sneaker industry forever. The iconic shoes still sell at a record number even these days and hide quite a lot of stories behind them. One such story revealed an insane amount of money for which the shoes worn by Jordan in an exhibition match got sold at an auction.

Back in 1985, Jordan played an exhibition game wearing his Air Jordan 1. This game sponsored by Nike is the one that made the shoes worn by Jordan sell at a record price. In this game, Jordan displayed his usual performance, finishing the game with 41 points.

During the game, at one point, Michael Jordan broke the backboard by dunking the ball into the basket. It made the game come to an end with Jordan’s team winning the game with a score of 113-112. Surprisingly, it didn’t hurt anyone except two opponents with some minor cuts.

Thereafter, those shoes got auctioned, which actually drew an insane amount of money. It is quite common for Air Jordan sneakers to attract a huge amount of money itself. However, the story for these particular shoes was different. The left shoe got an authentic look by having shattered glass pieces in the sole.

This made the shoes get listed for an insane amount of money of $850,000 at an online auction. However, it got sold for around $615,000. According to The Value, it got the tag of the most expensive auctioned sneakers. This record broke the previous record held by MJ’s sneakers itself. Notably, Jordan’s Air Jordan 1 which he wore in 1984-85, got sold for around $560,000 and made a record before these shoes broke it after a few months.

This incident actually proved the influence of Jordan in and out of the court. From showing phenomenal performances on the court to getting the honor of creating history by selling his shoes, Jordan was surely the best in the business.
