The Los Angeles Lakers were arguably one of the biggest messes in the NBA last season. All their experiments failed and they couldn’t even get a sniff of the post-season. From their new signings, Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony had the most significant impact. However, this isn’t the first time the two have donned the same jersey. Back in 2017, Melo and Russ were a force together at the Oklahoma City Thunder, and they dodged a major accident that could have potentially ended their lives.

There was a time Westbrook’s name sent shivers down the spines of his opponents. His reign with OKC is still one of the best in today’s game. He won the MVP having one of the most impressive regular seasons in the history of the NBA. After losing Kevin Durant, blessings came in his path when Paul George and Carmelo Anthony decided to join forces with him. While the Oklahoma Big-3 couldn’t make a loud noise, luck never left their side.

Five years ago, Russell Westbrook and the entire Oklahoma City Thunder team had to battle a rough flight as they prepared to land in Chicago.

Russell Westbrook and Melo were saved big time

It was a hard flight for the Thunder to be on. Facing off against Jimmy Butler’s Minnesota Timberwolves, the Thunder had lost a close 116-119 game. Hence, the atmosphere that night wasn’t cheerful. But OKC had bigger problems waiting for them that night. While flying thousands of feet above the ground, their plane was struck by an unidentified object which caused serious damage. Despite the major bang, the Thunder team somehow made it safely to the airport, but the plane looked brutal.

The entire nose of the plan was squished in. Officials began investigating the matter and said that the mystery object was most likely a bird. But the Thunder players were left puzzled. Many took to social media after the incident, one of them being Carmelo Anthony. The 10-time All-Star said, “What possibly could we have hit in the SKY at this time of night? Everyone is Safe, Though. “All Praise Due”.”

However, the Thunder’s playoff struggles cut this epic partnership down to just one season. Westbrook was a walking triple-double all season long. In addition, Carmelo Anthony was an efficient scorer averaging 16.2 points per game. But despite having a Big-3, the Utah Jazz took just six games to defeat them.

Now, years later a similar scenario has occurred with the Lakers. Both Westbrook and Melo are potentially on the chopping block and could have played their last minutes in LA. But nothing can be said for sure just yet.
