WNBA Star Brittney Griner who has been in a Russian prison for over 200 days, is getting another shot to get free. A Russian court has scheduled to hear her appeal on October 25th. A former NFL star who turned Democrat has voiced his support and expressed disgust at the preliminary trial.

Griner was detained in February at the Moscow airport. Custom authorities found vape cartridges containing hashish oil, which is illegal in Russia. And she was arrested on charges of smuggling illegal substances. She was then put on trial and after a few months and was found guilty. Griner was later sentenced to nine years in prison.

All this time, there have been many saying that her first trial was not fair.

Brittney Griner is getting a second shot at freedom

There have many reports saying Griner was going to appeal her sentence but there wasn’t any date set. And now a Russian Court is set to hear her appeal for the conviction on October 25th. Many are hoping that she gets justice this time around.

Colin Allred, who is a former linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, expressed his thoughts on the appeal. Allred is also a representative of the US Congress and he is a member of the Democratic party. He voiced his thoughts and said,” Brittney Griner has been wrongfully detained for nearly 8 months. Her first trial was a sham trial to begin with, and no matter the outcome of this appeal, we?ll be working hard to get her home to her loved ones.”

Griner has been the center of US and Russia negotiations over the past few months. Despite many politicians and celebrities calling her detainment illegal and unlawful, the US government has been negotiating for her release for some time now.

A few months ago, it was reported that the US Government had offered a prisoner swap program to get Griner and another American back home. At the same time, the United States was able to secure the release of seven Americans detained in Venezuela. And many are hoping that they can get Griner back home safe and sound as well. But right now she does have another shot at her freedom as she prepares for her appeal.
