The tragic loss of 29-year-old Memphis resident, Tyre Nichols has left the world dismayed. While action has been taken against the perpetrators, Nichols’ 4-year-old son is left without a dad. Nichols passed away on January 10th, three days after a traffic stop by Memphis Police Department officers. The five officers involved in the incident were later charged with second-degree murder. Many stars from the sporting world have offered their condolences to Nichols’ family and many continue to speak out and give their thoughts on the tragic incident.
Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson was the latest star to speak up on the issue. He tweeted, “Tyre Nichols was murdered by police officers & the images are absolutely horrific“. Furthermore, he showed compassion for Nichols’ family and thanked the authorities for acting swiftly. The NBA Hall of Famer joined athletes such as LeBron James, Bubba Wallace, and others in remembering Nichols’ memory.

Sports world reacts to the Tyre Nichols tragedy
A couple of days back, James tweeted, “WE ARE OUR OWN WORSE ENEMY!!!” Chris Paul also offered his condolences and called for a change to put an end to police brutality. “Change is needed at all levels and we all need to do our part. We can’t lose our humanity as a society. To the Nichols’ family and Memphis community, my heart is with you tonight,” Paul tweeted.
Meanwhile, NASCAR star Bubba Wallace was at a loss for words. “May you rest in peace my beautiful brother,” he tweeted.
Other athletes such as Mike Conley, Isiah Thomas, Robert Griffin III, and many more also shared their sympathies.
Steps taken by the Memphis PD after the incident
The five officers responsible were initially fired by the Memphis Police Department and later charged with second-degree murder and kidnapping, among other charges.

Moreover, the Mayor of Memphis, Jim Stickland announced on Friday that the ‘Scorpion Unit’, of which they were a part of, was to be disbanded. After graphic video footage was released showing the severe beatings Nichols suffered at the hands of the officers, the New York Times presented a timeline of the encounter.
