According to a report from Marca, in 2009, Pele was Brazil’s ambassador for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro at a conference in Copenhagen. Brazil was competing with the U.S. for hosting the sporting event in 2016. The city chosen by the U.S. for hosting the event was Chicago. So there were expectations about Michael Jordan attending the event. When Pele was asked about it, he confused Jordan with Michael Jackson.
He said, “I don’t know if your question is about Michael Jackson or another player.” As he was corrected immediately, the three-time World Cup winner burst out in laughter at his mistake.
Brazil was eventually selected as the host of the 2016 Olympics. However, Pele was unable to attend the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics because of poor health. He was supposed to light the Olympic cauldron. But unfortunately, he had to pull out of the celebrations just hours before the opening ceremony began.
However, he did enjoy the Olympics via TV. The former Sports Minister shared his happiness when the Brazilian national soccer team clinched the Olympic Gold medal on home soil. “I have so many memories and today a new one was created in the Maracana, what a perfect end to the Olympics,” Pele said.
