The Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson was one of the most prominent NBA figures in the 1980s. Despite having one of the longest marriages in Hollywood, Magic and his wife, Cookie Johnson had a lot of ups and downs in their conjugal life. Cookie Johnson had to bear the brunt of the burden most of the time. However, beating all the odds, the couple has completed over 30 years of marriage. In a recent documentary, Johnson reminisced about a very emotional moment in the relationship after overcoming plenty of pitfalls.
Magic Johnson became the #1 overall pick of the 1979 NBA draft, a few years after he met Cookie in college. The couple were in an on-and-off relationship during their college days in Michigan.

In the documentary ‘They Call Me Magic’, Magic Johnson recently opened up about his marriage with Earlitha Cookie Johnson. He narrated a moment from his wedding day in 1991. The Lakers legend revealed, “When I saw her looking so beautiful, I just started crying. It was a beautiful moment.” Johnson had proposed to Cookie three times in the past but he had also backed out for various reasons. Notably, he canceled the third engagement for a Lakers’ pool party, as reported by The Jasmine Brand.

Despite all the hiccups, the couple who had known each other for over 40 years, held on to their relationship which lead to a marriage that is still going strong. In 2019, 3x MVP Johnson shared a warm message to his wife on his Instagram.
He wrote, “Marrying you was one of my best decisions, I’ve ever made.” Though the couple married in 1991 after a lot of roadblocks, they had a massive misfortune waiting for them after their marriage.

Cookie stood alongside Magic
Just over a month after their marriage, the couple came to know that Johnson had contracted HIV. Fortunately, Cookie wasn’t affected. However, the worries didn’t end there, she was pregnant at that moment with the couple’s first child. But Cookie stood by him and the couple beat the virus’ impact together. Considering the stigma around the virus in the early 90s, the couple went on to hold a press meeting to inform the media. Cookie chose to stand by her husband during the press conference in a bright white suit.
