“Iowa Women’s Sports—field hockey, volleyball, right? In the Midwest, you have these programs, and I know it’s now popular, so everyone’s like, ‘Wow! The women’s basketball team sold out the football stadium!’ Or, ‘The Nebraska Girls Basketball team sold out their football stadium!’ Those niche sports have always been huge, you know?” Gaskins remarked.
Yet Gaskins acknowledges that Caitlin Clark has transcended the very same traditional boundaries of women’s sports. He recounts attending the women’s Final Four in Dallas last year, captivated by the energy and skill on display. He describes the experience as “one of the greatest games and things I’ve seen personally—in attendance—in my life.”
Gaskins is unequivocal in his assessment: “Northwestern has won a lot of championships in most sports—so we won and in those—the fan interests? Off the friggin charts! But Caitlin’s taking it to a whoooole different level.” He emphasizes that her influence extends far beyond the court, permeating the digital realm and driving a surge in viewership and engagement across various platforms, which, in turn, ushers in a new era of recognition and excitement for women’s sports. He points to the growing fan base, which now includes young boys eagerly seeking autographs from female athletes.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen little boys lined up to get a star female athlete to sign something; and I’m not saying that to be sexist or to be provocative, but as great as the Williams sisters were, oh, you name FloJo or going right back to that or whomever—that was largely resonating with other women.”
The rise of athletes like Caitlin Clark has ushered in a new era of content creation, one that transcends traditional game highlights and statistics. Gaskins underscores the importance of crafting narratives that resonate with audiences on a personal level.
Gaskins also highlights the broader impact on viewership and engagement, citing Charles Barkley’s comments about the recognizability of women’s college basketball stars as a sign of the times.
