Sabrina Ionescu's clutch shot—Is she the new face of women's basketball?

The New York Liberty is just one game away from claiming the 2024 title. The reason is Sabrina Ionescu. With the score tied at 77, Ionescu made the game-winning shot, a spectacular three that ended the game with 77-80. The Lynx are down 1-2 after her heroics and everyone took notice. Stephen Curry and Jrue Holiday were among the masses. But some retired pros were overwhelmed by the spectacle tonight.

The WNBA captured that glorious moment Sabrina Ionescu made that shot with a righteous, “Hang it in a museum.” Stephen Curry took notice and he not only agreed, he prematurely declared the winners with, “Call game them.” Among the many fans who agreed with the Splash Brother’s declaration was NBA veteran, Rex Chapman who tweeted a heart to show he loved it.

Jrue Holiday also added an emphatic excited emoji when he shared the clip of that chilly moment when the clock had a second left. Ionescu had the ball a significant distance from the three-point line, more than 30 feet away. She took it anyway and made a bucket.

Stephen Curry knows a thing or two about making shots from that deep. And most of the community saw what lit a fire behind Ionescu today. She was named in the All-WNBA Second Team ahead of the game. The hooper took the snub from the first team very personally, firing shots at the WNBA. She had a bone to pick and she did it with style.

One of the premiere WNBA players in the league right now, Sabrina Ionescu, had to make a point when she was left out of the All-WNBA First Team. Without that closer, Sabrina had a very disappointing night. She had made 10 points on a 4 of 11 shooting, with 2 of 6 from the 3-point line. With that last shot, she ended the night with 13 points, 2 assists, and 4 rebounds.

It’s not even surprising that Ionescu could nail a shot 30+ feet away. Last season, two of the best 3-point shooters in both leagues – Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu – went head-to-head in the NBA All-Star Weekend.

The Liberty star made it very difficult for The Chef to take that win and even put the Splash Brother under a lot of pressure. She made the game-winner from the deep and made WNBA Finals history for Liberty. New York is now within arm’s reach of its first-ever title in franchise history.

Despite all the stars hyping her, Sabrina Ionescu downplayed her performance. “I mean, that was just a great All-WNBA second-team performance,” Ionescu said, shutting the topic. She instead gave Breanna Stewart her flowers for making a game-high 30 points and putting Liberty close to a win. Game 4 on Friday could be the decider unless the Lynx makes a comeback in this best-of-five series.
