When you pop open a bottle of fizzy drink, the compressed carbon dioxide leaves the bottle with a hissing sound. Just like that, the news of JJ Redick’s appointment as the new HC released a highly pressured anxiety among the Lakers fans. After the firing of Darvin Ham, more than a month went by in search of a successor. Even with all the money in the world, the Lakers were unable to close out the deal with another leading candidate, Dan Hurley, which ultimately led the franchise straight back to Redick. Now, Rob Pelinka is urged to break the bank for Trae Young to support Redick’s new role.
But how would the former Magic guard fare in his new role? Look no further for an answer, as Colin Cowherd provides the ultimate solution that’d make Redick’s stint a success. The solution he had in store was none other than 3-time All-Star guard, Trae Young.
During the latest episode of Cowherd’s “The Herd” show, the veteran analyst floated a blockbuster trade move involving the Hawks shooting guard. After expressing his confidence in JJ Redick‘s smart and competitive persona, Cowherd lets the cat out of the bag. “This is not my big trade proposal, but it’s something that needs to be addressed Trae Young, and I’ve said before. I would have no problems Trae Young with LeBron James space the floor. With LeBron and AD (Anthony Davis) I’m (in) for it,” said Cowherd. He suggested the Lakers might need to give up D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, Austin Reaves, and multiple draft picks to acquire Young.

Following the announcement of JJ Redick’s coaching role, Trae Young took to social media to post an emoji of an hourglass. The cryptic post presumably indicates another big move on its way and that could be his move to LA. Previously, there were rumors linking Trae Young with the Lakers for a trade, as well as his teammate Dejounte Murray. With the Lakers reportedly looking for a big name to add alongside LeBron and AD, Trae Young certainly fits the bill.
Young signed a 5-year $215 million max extension with the Hawks back in 2022. With Trae set to earn $43,031,940 for the 2024/25 season, the Lakers might need to ship multiple players to the Hawks if the trade happens. As per Cowherd, they may have to give up D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt and Austin Reaves, along with multiple draft picks. But how does Trae fit into the system? Relax, Cowherd has you covered with that too.
Colin Cowherd Explains Recipe for Trae Young’s Success With Lakers
With the financial part out of the way, Cowherd dived into the aspects that matter the most on the hardboard; the system. “I do think Trae Young would work here. It feels like something AD would like because Trae Young would space the floor. It’d be harder to collapse,” explained Cowherd.
Highlighting the fact that the Lakers lack a 3-point shooter, he further added, “Trae Young’s an elite three ball, a true point guard, at least in 2024 he’s a point guard. And he’s a playmaker. So LeBron wouldn’t have to be the overwhelming playmaker every time down the floor. Trey Young could do some of that. LeBron could play off the ball occasionally, conserve some energy.”

He left the biggest takeaway for the last. Mentioning, Trae’s shooting prowess as a PG, Cowherd drew a parallel between his and Redick’s playing style. After all, who’s better at utilising a point guard than another point guard? With the 2-and-a-half-minute explanation, Cowherd left little space for the drawing board. If JJ Redick is listening, he might seriously consider Cowherd in his coaching team ahead of the next season.
