As a 19-year-old, Stephen Curry was seen as a scrawny and thin kid who would be too small for D-1 basketball. None of the big schools extended a scholarship. But Davidson College outside of Charlotte saw the potential of a magical player. Curry’s three years there were sensational, which included breaking the school’s all-time 3-pointer record. Talk about some foreshadowing of the damage he would continue in the NBA.

However, that wasn’t the last of his time at Davidson. In 2022, he returned to finish his undergraduate degree and was later honored by being inducted into the Hall of Fame. With such a deep and meaningful connection, that couldn’t be the end of the story. Curry wants to give back. According to Shams Charania, Curry is taking over as the assistant general manager for the university’s basketball programs.

This makes him the first active U.S. professional sports athlete to take an administrative role in the NCAA. None of the 540 NBA players have taken up such an opportunity if it did ever present itself.

This makes Stephen Curry the pioneer of another potential outlet for former NBA players. But it’s also fitting that the Chef and Davidson are forming this partnership. Nobody except the university was willing to take a chance at the modern-day icon. Now, it’s his turn to do the same for them.

“My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high-character student athletes to have that same experience,” Curry said about the job as per ESPN.

And he is coming with a team.

Stephen Curry, a man of many responsibilities

Stephen Curry is going to have his play full during his last spell in the NBA. The Baby Face Assassin’s primary duties are for the Golden State Warriors and reaching the pinnacle of basketball for the fifth time in his illustrious career. And with Davidson, he is hoping to identify a great talent just like himself, maybe this time lead an ‘underrated’ story by putting his faith in a passionate and promising prospect.

As part of the job of being as assistant manager, Curry will work in a two-man team. He will join Austin Buntz, the general manager who is a former Under Armor global sports marketing team member. The Warriors veteran hopes to provide guidance and assistance to the players of the program by sharing his own journey as an NCAA star.

But it doesn’t end there. His wife Ayesha Curry also has a role. She along with former Davidson supporters Donn, Matt and Erica Berman will set up an eight-figure fund to support the basketball program. Notably, Matt Berman played soccer at the university and will be another alma mater who works as a second assistant manager with Stephen Curry.

Likewise, Curry seems to hold the same dreams he had with the Golden State Warriors. The two-time MVP ants to see Davidson College grow into a collegiate powerhouse. Having his influence could be a major drawing factor for some of the top players in the league. Not only that, but the program will have first-hand guidance from one of the greatest players in basketball history.

This is huge news for the college that presented Stephen Curry with a platform to rise above the odds.
