The Pistons are having one of the worst seasons in history with a 3-36 record. This also means they are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Just above them is the Washington Wizards, with a slightly better record of 7-31, but still performing poorly. In the hopes of restructuring their rosters and changing their luck, the two teams recently engaged in a trade.

The Pistons sent their forwards Marvin Bagley III, Isaiah Livers, and a pair of future second-round draft picks to the Wizards in exchange for Mike Muscala, and Danilo Gallinari. By letting go of Marvin, the Pistons now have created more room in their budget, as per sources.

More flexibility for Detroit after waiving Marvin Bagley II

According to an X post by ESPN’s Bobby Marks, “Shedding the Marvin Bagley II contract for next season has Detroit with a projected $64M in room.” This means that they will have more flexibility and larger cap space to work with during the offseason in signing other players. One of the reasons Detroit decided it was time to part ways with Marvin could be because he had missed a significant number of games this season, as he had in previous years.

The 24-year-old forward had signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Pistons in July 2022. So, he still had one season left on his contract after the 2023-24 campaign at $12.5 million. So when we consider this, it is obvious that for the Pistons, this trade was more likely motivated by finance than any other aspect. This is so because there is more to this exchange than just Marvin’s contract.

The recruits from the Wizards have expiring contracts

On the Wizards’ side, we had Muscala and Gallinari, both of whose contracts were to expire this offseason and they were to hit the free-agent market. Detroit had done its math because by bagging the veterans’ expiring contract, and cutting ties with Marvin with still one season left in his contract, they can remove his pending payment from the payroll. Adding all of this, the Pistons’ cap space during the offseason comes to about $64 million.

Marvin played 26 games with Detroit this season, averaging 10.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists. This is a player with brimming potential except for the nagging injuries that have slowed him down. Hopefully, the trade will be the beginning of something bigger and better for the young star.
